what is taekwondo?

Taekwondo is one of Martial Arts that have been introduced by Korea in year of 1989. Basically, the words of taekwondo itself has already defined the meaning of that martial art. In Korean, "ta" means to strike or break with foot, "kwon" means to strike or break with fist, and "do" means way or method. All in one, taekwondo may be defined as the art of the foot and fist or the art of kicking and punching.

In general, there are two branches of taekwondo development:
  • "Traditional taekwondo"which is refers to martial art as it was established in the 1950s and 1960s in the South Korean Military. Thus, the names and symbolism of the traditional patterns often refer to elements of Korean history.
  • "Sport taekwondo" has emphasis on speed and competition as in Olympic sparring. there are two subdivided into main styles. First, from Kukkiwon, the source of the sparring system, and second, World Taekwondo federation. The other comes from the International Taekwondo Federation.
